The Heilborn Natural Bathing Area combines the pleasure of swimming with a water landscape designed to be close to nature. Unlike conventional outdoor swimming pools, the water is treated without chlorine or other chemical additives. Aquatic plants, micro-organisms and special filters each perform clearly defined tasks: The plants remove nutrients from the water, whilst filter substrates and technical systems reduce organic matter and small particles. The regeneration area is separated from the swimming area, so that bathers do not come into contact with the aquatic plants growing there.
The swimming pond, which covers around 1,050 square metres, is divided into areas for swimmers and non-swimmers. For young children, there is a shallow area with a stream and a play area. A water slide, a diving platform, wooden walkways and spacious sunbathing areas complete the facilities. Those wishing to get active will find, amongst other things, a beach volleyball court in the adjacent Bürgerpark. Green spaces, a children’s playground and an open-air arena offer further opportunities for active or peaceful moments.
Visitors can also discover how the natural swimming pool works on site: plant filters, a regeneration pond and technical components work together to ensure the water cycle and biological treatment. Guided tours for groups, schools and nurseries, available on request, provide insights into these processes as well as into Merzig’s swimming tradition.
The natural swimming pool is open seasonally, usually from mid-May to early September. Unless otherwise stated or subject to special regulations, the daily opening hours are from 10.00 to 20.00. Current opening times, admission prices and any restrictions should be checked on the operator’s website before visiting.
