Merzig, the apple town
Merzig is home to Vieze, the Saarland's apple wine. Orchard farming in the Merzig region has only been around for about 200 years, but it has become very important in the district town of Merzig. Pears are grown here, as well as plums and mirabelle plums. But apples are the most important fruit. Merzig's Viezkultur
The apple has become a symbol of the city, thanks to our well-known Viez festival. Viez is the name of the popular wine made from regional apples and drunk in autumn.
The Romans already appreciated apple wine, which they called ‘Vize Vinum’. They drank it as a substitute for their usual grape wine. However, cider production only really took off at the beginning of the 19th century. The boom in orchard cultivation and thus also apple cultivation led to an increase in the production of fruit wines. This marked the beginning of cider culture in the region around Merzig.
Krönung der Viezkönigin
Gekrönt wird die Merziger Viezkönigin alljährlich im Rahmen des „Markt der Köstlichkeiten“, der immer am 3. Samstag im September stattfindet. Ein Jahr lang repräsentiert sie dann ihre Heimatstadt und natürlich den Viez bei zahllosen Festen der Region und bei überregionalen Veranstaltungen wie der „Grünen Woche“ in Berlin.
Merziger Äppelkischd
Die Gaulandschaften, die unsere Stadt umschließen, tragen nicht umsonst den Namen „Merziger Äppelkischd“. Von den ca. 660.000 Streuobstbäumen im Saarland sind ca. 290.000 Apfelbäume. Von diesen stehen wiederum 58.000 im Gebiet der Kreisstadt Merzig. Eine beträchtliche Anzahl, die die Landschaft und Kultur der Region prägt.
